For more 104 years Second Baptist Church has been an integral part of the African American community of Aiken and the surrounding areas. It has stood as a beacon, ministering to the spiritual, educational, social, recreational, and developmental needs of the broader Aiken community.
Second Baptist has always been an active participant in the life and growth of Aiken. The first Head Start program in Aiken was organized and held at the Church. Second Baptist youths were the first African-Americans to take part in the city-wide Athletic Church League. Second Baptist Church through its Pastor and lay leadership continues to search for solutions to the many problems that beset our community. These problems impact negatively on all of the citizens of our "All American City" without regard to race, ethnicity, gender, age, social or economic standing. They run the gamut and include illiteracy, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, truancy, early childhood development, housing, and services to our senior citizens. To further expand and formalize our continued involvement in the community of Aiken, the leadership in 1997 implemented the formation of the Second Baptist Church Community Development Corporation. The SBC/CDC has a separate identity from the church and is a fully registered tax exempt 501( c ) (3) corporation.
Community development cannot have a "single issue" focus. Consequently, in order to address the multiple and interrelated needs of the community, the SBC/CDC must have an all inclusive focus. Elim Gardens represents our first venture into significant structural community development activities. It is, however, only a beginning. Future efforts will continue to have a "foundation" in the housing needs of the targeted community and will expand to include the interrelated needs:
elder care, senior housing, health care, child care services, education, training, economic development, leisure time activities and youth services.
The housing efforts for the SBC/CDC over the coming months will focus on acquiring the funding/ financing through grants, gifts, loans and other means to provide housing in the following needed categories:
Rental
Home ownership
Multi-family housing
Senior housing
Transitional housing
The continuing mission and purpose of the Corporation shall be to;
(1) Identify and acquire available land within the north end community of Aiken for the purpose of constructing or rehabilitating residential housing;
(2) Build community support for neighborhood restoration for families and children;
(3) Establish a business incubator center for prospective and current entrepreneurs;
(4) Create a computer information network center to service the Greater Aiken County;
(5) Establish a partnership with banks and state housing development corporations targeted to identify first-time homebuyers
