Our Pastor

Pastor Douglas A. Slaughter has been in ministry for thirty years and has led the Second Baptist Church since 1993. Second Baptist under Pastor Slaughter's leadership has an active membership of six hundred. He has led in the development of several ministries including a Christian school, Elim Gardens (an affordable housing project), Second Baptist Lake View Retreat Site and many other ministries to develop and strengthen the spiritual needs of the congregation.

In 1997 Senior Pastor led the congregation to develop and implement a visionary strategic plan: Vision 2050. The Goals of Vision 2050 are to increase membership, develop a multimedia ministry, construct senior housing, a junior and senior high school, build a Family Life Center and Job Training Center and develop a Federal Credit Union.

Under Pastor Slaughter's leadership, Second Baptist Church developed three 501c3 Corporations, The Jesse M. Miles Family Life Center, which focuses on educational and personal development. The Second Baptist Church Community Development Corporation and Second Baptist Community Health Center, which develops educational programs to strengthen community and public health.

In January 2003 Reverend Slaughter developed and implemented S.P.I.R.I.T. Institute, a Church-based training program that focuses on personal and spiritual development. Courses cover not only biblical studies, but classes that focus on home ownership, financial freedom and successful investment and retirement strategies, through the development, implementation and administration of growth oriented youth ministries, leadership development, Christian Education and Sunday School. Second Baptist Church has become a model church, demonstrating how small congregations through faith, prayer and commitment can produce Mega Ministries.
